Both microwave and lightwave are governed by the same Maxwell's equations. However, many people in optics rarely read papers in microwave journals and "reinvented the wheel" from time to time, while many people in microwave rarely read papers in optics journals and keep "reinventing the wheel". It is therefore very worthwhile to encourage the microwave community and the lightwave community to meet and talk (or listen) to each other in a conference. In PIERS 2013 Stockholm, photonics & optics take about 40%, microwave (incl. RF and mm wave) takes another 40%, and the rest is for general electromagnetics. PIERS 2013 Stockholm is a great event as a Family Reunion of Electromagnetics, spanning the classical and quantum worlds.
Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) provides an international forum for reporting progress and recent advances in the modern development of electromagnetic theory and its new and exciting applications since 1989. Topics include radiation, propagation, diffraction, scattering, guidance, resonance, power, energy and force issues, and all other modern developments, with spectra ranging from statics to RF, microwave, lightwave, and beyond.
