[Coloquio ICF] N. Stolterfoht y C. Estrada, 21 y 22 Feb.
Estimados Colegas,
Guided transmission of highly charged ions through insulating
nanocapillaries
el día
Martes 21 de febrero a las 17:30.
Resumen:
In our laboratory we initiated experiments in which
slow highly charged ions are transmitted through capillaries of
100-200 nm diameter and 10 µm length in a highly insulating
PET foil. We found that the majority of the transmitted
particles preserve their charge state during the passage
through the nanocapillaries even when the capillary axis is
tilted with respect to the incident beam. This behavior
strikingly differs from the transmission of highly charged ions
through capillaries in metals studied previously. For
insulating PET the angular distributions of the ions have a
maximum equal to the tilt angle indicating a “guiding” of the
ions within the capillary. This observation is surprising,
since highly charged ions are generally neutralized when
scattered at the surface. After the pioneering experiments
with PET several laboratories have started to investigate the
guiding mechanisms with other materials. In this talk the
basic mechanisms of ion guiding will be introduced. Moreover,
examples for new developments will be given. Scaling laws of
guiding for varying energy and charge state of the projectile
will presented. Dynamic properties will be discussed in terms
of temporary charge patches within the capillaries and
visualized by animations of theoretical and experimental
results.
